Week 2 of the NFL season was thrilling, with matchups that appealed to all types of fans. Defensive slugfests, high-scoring games, and frantic finishes were all on the menu. Despite the enthralling action that drew in the crowds, injuries did occur, and there were a lot of them.
Unfortunately, for the time being, certain clubs will be missing key star-caliber players. The Cleveland Browns’ wide receiver depth is limited after Jarvis Landry was placed on the injured reserve list with a strain to his medial collateral ligament. The Houston Texans placed quarterback Tyrod Taylor on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury, and we witnessed how that affected them against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.
The San Francisco 49ers’ running back room is strewn with injuries, with each ball carrier suffering from a different ailment. The Philadelphia Eagles have also placed offensive tackle Brandon Brooks (pectoral) and defensive end Brandon Graham (ruptured Achilles) on injured reserve.
That’s only the start of the injury news as we go into the weekend. Our NFL correspondents are back to provide you with the most important names on the injury report and their condition heading into Week 3.

Ribs are injured.
Hopkins is expected to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, but the fact that he hasn’t practiced this week raises some concerns about his game-day health. The next 48 hours are critical, said to coach Kliff Kingsbury, but Hopkins will be a game-time decision. Josh Weinfuss (@JoshWeinfuss)
Gage suffered an injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week and is listed as “week-to-week.” The Falcons may replace him in a variety of ways, from lining up running back Cordarrelle Patterson or tight ends Kyle Pitts or Hayden Hurst on the outside to relying more on Olamide Zaccheaus or Tajae Sharpe. Coach Arthur Smith’s offense is likely to use a mix of all of them against Calvin Ridley. Michael Rothstein is a writer and producer.
Concussion is a common injury.
Atlanta’s best cornerback, Terrell, will miss Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. It may make it difficult for Atlanta to defend Kenny Golladay, a tall receiver who seldom gets separation. T.J. Green, who switched from safety in the summer, will take Terrell’s spot in the starting lineup for the Falcons.
Brown has been classified as doubtful after missing practice on Thursday and being restricted on Friday. However, despite having the same left ankle issue, he had 113 yards receiving and one score against the Kansas City Chiefs last week. Brown has eight touchdowns in his last eight games, and he might keep that streak going against a Detroit defense that has allowed four touchdown receptions in two games this season. Jamison Hensley (Jamison Hensley)
Wallace was characterized by coach Sean McDermott as “moving in the right way” on Friday, and he practiced completely to finish the week. He was, however, classified as doubtful on the final injury report. Wallace was forced to sit out the most of the Dolphins’ Week 2 game due to cramps. Dane Jackson, another cornerback, is doubtful for the game due to a knee issue. Wallace seems to have a better chance of playing against Washington than not, but two doubtful players at any position are worth watching. Alaina Getzenberg is a writer who lives in New York City.
Due to a left knee injury, Dalton will miss Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Justin Fields, a rookie with the Bears, will start his first NFL regular-season game. Coach Matt Nagy said that Dalton would not be placed on injured reserve and that when healthy, he will continue to be Chicago’s primary quarterback. Dickerson, Jeff
Higgins has been classified as questionable for Sunday’s AFC North showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He did, however, practice on Friday after missing practice earlier in the week. Despite the foreboding moniker, the second-year receiver sees it as a positive omen. Bengals coach Zac Taylor said the club would make a final determination on Higgins’ game status as soon as possible. This one will be worth monitoring all the way up until kickoff, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he plays. – Ben Little
Ribs are injured.
Cooper was restricted in the first two sessions of the week due to a rib ailment that he suffered in the opener and was exacerbated late in the Chargers’ victory last week. He was, however, a full participant in Friday’s practice. Cooper will be ready against the Eagles, according to head coach Mike McCarthy, but the receiver hasn’t always put up huge numbers when he’s been down. However, given that it is the Eagles, this might change. He has more receptions (33) and yards (614) versus Philadelphia than any other club in his career. Since joining the Cowboys, he has three 100-yard performances against the Eagles. Todd Archer is a writer.
Patrick, who has seven catches and two touchdowns on eight targets this season, was restricted in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. He is expected to play against the New York Jets on Sunday unless he suffers an unforeseen setback. Courtland Sutton (hip), another Denver wideout, was restricted in practice on Wednesday but practiced completely on Thursday. Legwold, Jeff
Concussion is a common injury.
Williams was put on the reserve/injured list by the Lions on Thursday. He’ll miss his second consecutive week due to a concussion sustained during the 49ers’ Week 1 defeat. Williams was anticipated to be the Lions’ top receiver before the season, but with more targets from Jared Goff, Quintez Cephus has emerged as a strong option in the offense. Eric Woodyard’s remark
If Jenkins is unable to play, the Packers will be forced to rely on their third option to defend Aaron Rodgers’ blindside against the 49ers on Sunday night. Jenkins is rated as questionable by coach Matt LaFleur. For All-Pro David Bakhtiari, who began the season on the physically unable to perform list while recuperating from ACL surgery in January, the Pro Bowl left guard has been filling in at left tackle. Jenkins sustained an ankle injury late in the Lions’ victory on Monday night, but he was able to complete the game. Demovsky, Rob
After exercising for the first time this week since hurting both ankles in Week 2, Wentz will most likely be a game-time decision for Sunday’s game against Tennessee. Through the first two games of the season, both defeats, Wentz is 45-of-69 for 498 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. Wentz has been sacked six times and hit an additional 21 times in those two games, which is the most concerning statistic. If Wentz is out, coach Frank Reich isn’t announcing whether Jacob Eason or Brett Hundley would start for the Colts. Mike Wells’ remark
Jacobs had turf toe in training camp, was ill in Week 1, and hasn’t worked in two weeks after injuring his ankle in the season opener. He’s classified as questionable to play against the Dolphins. In any case, against Miami, Las Vegas, which has the third-worst rushing attack in the NFL while having the best overall offense, must be more balanced. Las Vegas’ frequently reshuffled offensive line, as well as running backs Peyton Barber and Kenyan Drake, will have to step up. Raiders coach Jon Gruden stated, “We’ve got to provide them some better looks in the running game.” “We messed up on a few assignments, and we need to improve our blocking. We need to improve our play-calling. We need to improve our execution. Running the ball in the first couple of weeks was clearly insufficient.” Gutierrez, Paul
Bosa is classified as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, but given his toughness, I expect him to play. Shelley Smith says:
Jones’ status is classified as questionable due to a leg issue.
Jones, a stalwart in the Chargers’ secondary, will not play on Sunday.
Ribs are injured.
Henderson will be a game-time decision, according to Rams coach Sean McVay, as he continues to recover from a rib cartilage injury sustained in the fourth quarter of a Week 2 victory over the Colts. “It’s a matter of pain tolerance,” McVay said on Friday. “We want to make the most of the time we have, but we have backup measures in place.” If Henderson is unable to play, Sony Michel will start and rookie Jake Funk will also see action. Lindsey Thiry (Lindsey Thiry)
Ribs have been fractured.
Early in the week, Dolphins coach Brian Flores declared Tagovailoa out, allowing Jacoby Brissett to make his first start since the season’s end. Tagovailoa’s availability is “day-to-day,” according to Flores, thus his availability in the future is unknown. — Louis-Jacques Marcel
Cook received some work during practice on Friday after being sidelined on Wednesday and Thursday. For the Vikings’ game against the Seattle Seahawks, he is classified as doubtful. Coach Mike Zimmer said earlier this week that Cook would have to be in excruciating pain to be ruled out of the game, so it’s likely that this decision will be made after the running back completes a pregame exercise to see whether he’ll be able to play. When asked whether he thinks a running back can miss a week of practice and still be ready to play on game day, Zimmer replied, “If you’re talking about Dalvin, I think Dalvin can.” Courtney Cronin (Courtney Cronin)
The Patriots’ leading rusher was restricted in practice all week and had to wear white gloves during short media access viewing times, which was uncommon for him. The good news is that he was removed off the injury list on Friday and should be available for Sunday’s game. — Reiss, Mike
McCoy has been ruled out for the second game in a row with a calf injury, which is understandable given how severely the Saints battled with protection and communication problems last week, garnering just 128 yards against Carolina. Even when McCoy was injured on the first drive, they dominated Green Bay in Week 1, with second-year guard (and former college center) Cesar Ruiz moving across to replace him. After working on communication problems all week in practice, the Saints believe they can fix them. The Patriots will put it to the test on Sunday, attempting to confuse and overpower New Orleans’ offensive line. Triplett, Mike
Engram is expected to play for the first time this season. His debut against the Falcons, who have once again struggled against opposing tight ends, may come at a good moment. This season, Atlanta has given up 12 catches for 144 yards and three scores to tight ends. This week, Engram has been restricted in practice and is classified as doubtful for Sunday’s game. Jordan Raanan is a writer.
Crowder and Coleman will be unavailable for the Jets. Coleman was third on the depth chart last week, so Ty Johnson and Michael Carter will suffice. Braxton Berrios will take Crowder’s spot in the slot once again. Cimini, Rich
He injured his MCL during practice on Thursday, and although he isn’t expected to miss the game against the Cowboys on Monday night, he is in danger of missing it. In his stead, former first-round selection Andre Dillard would start. If Mailata is injured, the Eagles will be down two starting offensive linemen, with rookie Landon Dickerson filling in for Brandon Brooks at right guard. Tim McManus, Ph.D.
Injury to the pectoral muscle
Roethlisberger practiced fully on Friday after being restricted in practice on Thursday due to a pectoral ailment. For Sunday, he does not have an injury designation. — Brooke Pryor is an actress who plays Brooke Pryor.
Watt said that he completed sufficient work throughout the week and that the “door is open” for him to play on Sunday. He is classified as a suspect. Watt wouldn’t specify how much the door is open, but the outside linebacker depth will be decreased at the very least. Alex Highsmith, who has been out of practice all week due to a persistent groin problem, has been ruled out. Former undrafted free agent Jamir Jones is the next man up, and he may get more action on Sunday.
Johnson is also out for Sunday after injuring his knee on the last play of the Raiders’ defeat on Sunday.
This is as much about Mitchell as it is about the running back position as a whole. He didn’t get much practice this week and is classified as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Packers. Coach Kyle Shanahan, on the other hand, is optimistic that Mitchell will be able to play, owing to the Niners’ lack of proven alternatives at the position. Trey Sermon, a fellow rookie who passed concussion protocol and is expected to start only two weeks after being a healthy scratch, is one of the backs who will be ready. With Raheem Mostert out for the season and JaMycal Hasty out with a high left ankle sprain, having Sermon and Mitchell available against the Packers would be excellent news. What are the other options? Depending on Mitchell’s availability, Trenton Cannon, Jacques Patrick, and potential practice squad call-ups Kerry Johnson and Chris Thompson may all be involved. Nick Wagoner is a writer.
After receiving a second evaluation this week, Pierre-Paul has been advised to rest his ailments and will miss Sunday’s game against the Rams. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka will take his position. Jenna Laine is a writer who lives in New York City.
After missing practice on Wednesday and Friday and being a limited participant on Thursday, Dupree is classified as doubtful. He’s been nine months since tearing his ACL. That amount of time has passed since his injuries for him to be expected to heal. Coach Mike Vrabel said that Dupree’s narrative revolves on how his knee reacts to the hammering it receives on game day. Last week, Dupree played 75 percent of defensive snaps against the Seahawks, and 68 percent in the season opener. Turron Davenport (Turron Davenport)
Ioannidis is an important part of Washington’s pass rush, which will be essential against Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen. Ioannidis injured his knee against the New York Giants on Sept. 17, but he returned to the game. The knee, however, stiffened up later in the week, and he was unable to train. He’s on the list of suspects. Washington can win without him, but his presence improves the team’s interior rotation. ‘John Keim’
